Dorothy Riley

Dorothy Riley, Medical Assistant Specialist

Dorothy Riley (Al'aq) is the daughter of Ruth and John K. Riley, Sr., and a Yup'ik tribal member from Pitka's Point. Her mother was born and raised in Bethel, and her father was born and raised at the mouth of the Andreafsky River between Pitka's Point and St. Mary's. Her parents currently live in Pitka's Point.

"I was born and raised in Bethel until I was 10 years old," Dorothy said, "Then my family moved to Pitka's Point. I graduated from Mt. Edgecumbe High School."

Dorothy graduated from the Career Academy in Anchorage in August of 1999 as a Medical Assistant Specialist.

"After successful completion and taking the national exam, I became a National Certified Medical Assistant. It took one year to complete the program. The most difficult part about earning my certificate was juggling my time between working full time, attending school, doing homework, and spending quality time with my daughter.

"Currently, my duties and responsibilities include screening patients, documenting their vital signs, setting up and assisting providers with various procedures, administering medications and immunizations, drawing blood, reviewing lab and x- ray results, ordering medical and office supplies, and instructing patients as needed."

Recently, Dorothy was promoted to Lead CMA with responsibility for training newly hired LPNs and CMAs in their clinic roles, and generally keeping the clinic running smoothly. Dorothy is also an active member of the Advance Access Team and Customer Satisfaction Team.

"I challenge the younger generation to become successful by completing high school, getting a certification or a degree to obtain a career they are happy with, and continue to have goals in life that will keep them wanting to strive for more. Don't delay your education because you'll regret it later."
