YKHC and IHS present at special Grand Rounds

On December 16, 2005, Nicotine Control & Research Program had visitors from across the nation.

Caroline Renner with ANTHC, Dr. Richard Windsor of Washington State University and Dr. Christi Patten from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., including Stacy Kelly and Doreen lacy with ANTHC. These visitors presented at a High Risk OB grand rounds.

The world-renowned expert in this field, Dr. Windsor, covered Nicotine Replacement Therapy and pregnancy. Dr Patten and Ms. Renner provided information on an upcoming study on interventions for pregnant women. Twenty health care providers participated from 8-9 a.m. over a hot breakfast, complements of Nicotine Control & Research Program.

Tobacco use during pregnancy is high in the YK Delta. According to the State of Alaska Maternal and Child Health Data Book 2003 and the US Prams 2003 Western Alaska K. Perham-Hester 2003, 57 percent of pregnant women in Western Alaska use chew tobacco compared to the rest of the nation, which is less then 1 percent. For pregnant smokers, it is 16 percent as compared to the Unities States, which is 13 percent.
