Dr. Marin Granholm

THE CLINIC CONNECTION

YKHC provider elected to Academy of Family Physicians

One of YKHC’s Family Medicine providers has recently been elected to the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Board of Directors. YKHC is honored to recognize Dr. Marin Granholm for her recent election to the AAFP’s leadership team.

Elected as the New Physician Director during the annual AAFP National Conference of Special Constituencies in Kansas City earlier this month, Dr. Granholm will represent new family doctors across the nation, as well as the Yukon-Kuskowim region, for the next year.

Commenting on what she hopes to accomplish, Dr. Granholm states, “My goals are both to faithfully represent my constituencies, but also to bring my Bush Alaska perspective to a national audience. For example, there has been a great deal of discussion nationally about the “future of family medicine,” where we will go as a specialty, whether we will continue to practice the broad range of medicine we do now. I believe that for the future of places like Bethel (although there is truly no place like Bethel), we have to.”

This marks the first time any YKHC physician has held responsibility on the AAFP Board, and furthermore it is the first time a member of this community is representing the medical arena of the Yukon-Kuskokwim region on a national level.

The AAFP Board is a small entity of medical professionals that helps enact the goals of the organization. The AAFP is one of the largest medical organizations in the nation with over 94,000 members. The Academy promotes and maintains high quality standards for family doctors and influences health care policy at the federal level.

Marin Granholm graduated from St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Anchorage in 2003. She began working for the YKDRH in August 2003 and is currently a Family Medicine Physician in the Yukon Clinic.
