Four village groups win grants
Congratulations to Tuntutuliak, Newtok, Tununak and Napakiak! They were chosen out of 13 applicants and will each receive $2,500 grants in support of programs in their villages to increase physical activity.
Tuntutuliak already has a 10,000 steps program in place. They will use the funds to buy equipment for a snowshoeing program and for basketballs.
Newtok has a variety of activities planned. They will purchase equipment for basketball, volleyball, hockey and some exercise videos. They plan activities for all age groups.
Tununak also has a variety of activities planned. They requested funding to purchase equipment for soccer, basketball, baseball, volleyball plus Frisbees and jump ropes.
Napakiak has plans for swimming activities and wants to bring back Yup'ik dancing. They are going to make drums and possibly fans. They also requested funds for pails for a berry-picking project.
Grants were awarded to villages where clear leadership was identified in the proposals. The grant money is intended as "seed money" to get projects started that will continue into the future long after the money is spent. It is important that groups have a plan for where to store equipment and preserve it for future use. Additional consideration is given to projects that were planned by teamwork.
It is expected that community grants will again be awarded next May. Be thinking of programs your village would like to start and watch for grant proposal information around March. The schools will have an opportunity to apply for $5,000 grants this fall. Programs planned with the school and community will be most welcome. Remember, the idea is to fund programs to increase physical activity, which helps prevent diabetes and many other health problems.
Turn your radio on!
The Diabetes Prevention and Control Program will be hosting a monthly radio show to share diabetes information with the community.
Stay tuned to KYUK on the second Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. to learn how diabetes can be prevented.
If you already have diabetes, learn how to prevent some of the complications such as stroke, heart attacks, blindness and amputations. Hear how some of your neighbors are learning to live with diabetes and have a healthy life.

Is your child overweight?
Being overweight increases your child's risk for many health problems such as heart problems, diabetes and high blood pressure. Yet a recent study (NHANES) found that most overweight children and many overweight teens have never been told by a health professional that they are overweight.
Ask about your child's weight, blood pressure and any labs that are done at the clinic. Find out if the results are in the healthy range. Learn how they can be improved if they are not normal. YKHC has good resources. Ask for a referral to see the dietitian for some good weight management ideas for your child or for your self. Children should rarely be put on a diet but you could get some help on how to slow the weight gain.
