Damage is being assessed and donations are being accepted after a fire raged through Hooper Bay on August 3. The fire began in the school and went on to engulf more than a dozen homes, a grocery store and a teacher housing unit. Hooper Bay Health Aides were relieved to report no injuries or casualties.
YKHC assisted the community of Hooper Bay by sending extra medical supplies, making emergency response teams available, sending employees to support Health Aides, sending counselors to respond to behavioral health needs, and sending an OEH employee to assess the village water situation. YKHC is in close-contact with the community of Hooper Bay and is available to provide further assistance as requested.
Donations can be dropped off at Pacifica Guest House in Bethel. Food, bottled water, clothing and other household goods are needed for the more than 60 people who lost everything in the fire.
Arctic Transportation Service, Arctic Circle Air, Hageland Aviation Services and Grant Air are transporting donations to Hooper Bay at no charge with no weight restrictions as long as all goods are well-packaged.
