Students learn to 'kick butts' with JROTC and Nicotine Control

by Carrie Enoch, YKHC Nicotine Control

On April 9, Jehona Kadriu and Ilza Kadriu, JROTC students from Bethel Regional High School, presented on "Kick Butts Day" to students in grades 26 at the Ayaprun Elitnaurvik at the Kilbuck School.

The presenters used visuals such as the flip chart with pictures of deceased lungs, gums, arteries, heart, etc. that were caused by tobacco use.

They also had a "jar of tar," representing the amount of tar that collects in a person's lungs if he/she smokes one pack of cigarettes for a year. Mr. Gross Mouth earned the most interest as the students could see and touch the effects of iqmik or chewing tobacco, yellow teeth, cavities, and leukoplakia (white patches in the mouth where chew is kept). Samantha and Carrie Enoch from the Nicotine Control & Research program were there to answer questions.

A big thank-you to MSG Keith Beairsto, Army Instructor Bethel JROTC, who allowed us to work with his students! Thank-you to the young ladies Jehona and Ilza, who did a wonderful job! Thanks also to Panigkaq Agatha Sheilds, principal at the Ayaprun Elitnaurvik, for welcoming us to their school in celebration of "Kick Butts Day." Kick Butts Day is a day to recognize the youth advocates who speak out against tobacco.
