Russian Mission surpasses the 100 percent challenge

by YKHC Public Relations Staff

Largely due to the efforts of the Russian Mission community and clinic staff, the children of Russian Mission are among the healthiest!

On Saturday, June 2, YKHC traveled to Russian Mission to honor the community and clinic staff during Russian Mission's annual tribal gathering event.

Last month, Russian Mission took on a major challenge to make sure every child and adolescent has a Well-Child/Adolescent exam. Not only did 102 children and adolescents receive thorough medical and age appropriate developmental assessments, they received any needed immunizations. The goal was 100 percent well child examined and immunized and 100 percent they succeeded!

Elena Herrera, YKHC Early Periodic Screening and Diagnostic Treatment (EPSDT) Program Coordinator, expressed appreciation to the community of Russian Mission for their support and promotion of children's health. Clinic staff Olga Evan, CHA; Sheila Minock, CHP; Christina Changsak, CCT; and Debbie Kozevnikoff, Clinic Janitor, were each honored for their contribution to the Well-Child project and presented gift certificates. Not present at the event were staff members Mae Housler, CHP, and Sharon Kosevnikoff, CHA, who deserve much thanks as well.

"Being a health aide is not always easy," said Leif Albertson, Supervisor Instructor Coordinator. "I would like to ask everyone, when you see one of your health aides walking around town, to take a moment and to thank them for the job they do. Today we are here to celebrate them because they rose to meet this particular challenge, but the Health Aides in this community rise to the challenge every day when they see earaches, headaches and three a.m. emergenices." Albertson expressed his appreciation and presented two cans of coffee for the clinic and gift certificates for the clinic staff.

The clinic staff also honored Debbie Kozevnikoff for her years of
service. The clinic is praised continuously for its cleanliness.

"This project went quite well. The dedication of the clinic staff and community concern for children's health was tremendous and was a key piece to the success of this project," noted Herrera. "We hope to expand this initiative to other villages, ultimately increasing the number of healthy children in the YK Delta Region."

All the children's and parents' names were entered in a door prize drawing. Winners were:

Infant float coats
- Nathan Kozevnikoff and Teslin Housler

Adult float coats - Sheila Minock, Sharon Kozevnikoff, and Helen Alexie

Boys/girls bikes - Justin Stephanoff, age 5; Demetri Kozevnikoff, age 13; Kimberly Minock, age 14; Vassalisa Askoak, age 12.
