Second annual Mass Dispensing Exercise tests emergency preparedness
Nearly 500 Bethel residents received flu vaccinations at the Mass Dispensing Exercise (MDE) held at the Bethel armory on Saturday, November 3.
Despite a decrease in the number of residents who turned out for the event, the YK Delta Immunization Coalition felt success was based on operation efficiencies and public awareness of emergency preparedness.
"The vaccination clinic served to test potential emergency operations in an influenza outbreak situation," said Robert Filipczak, YKHC Immunizations Coordinator.
Participation by community volunteers provided resources and manpower. Volunteer agencies included UAA School of Nursing, YKHC, Bethel HAM radio operators, Bethel Alternative Boarding School students, Bethel Regional High School Students, Bethel Family Clinic, the Bethel Fire Department, City of Bethel, State Correctional Center, Bethel Youth Facility.
"It was a success not based on the number of people but that we are looking to be prepared for a true emergency here in Bethel," said Kathleen Stanton, Clinic Manager for the MDE. "Bethel came together to put on the event, raising awareness of emergency preparedness and that is what is most significant."
Mobile dispensing units were set up for the first time to maximize outreach to the public. Based on traffic activity, key locations included AC Store, Swanson's, and Hageland.
The coalition would like to thank to all volunteers who assisted with the MDE and the local businesses and agencies who provided donations-AC Store, Swanson's, Bethel Car Rental, Corina's Caselot, the Bethel Volunteer Emergency Services Association, and the National Guard.
