Floyd Bill finds out how much fun skiing can be.
Ski Joy!
Toksook Bay students discover the thrill of the hill (and the trail)
Lots of good snow late in the season made for good opportunities to go cross-country skiing and snow-shoeing when the days were long and the weather was mild. A Diabetes program fitness grant funded the purchase of ski and snow shoe equipment. Teachers made the time after school and on weekends to take students out to have fun and exercise. Dirk Martin's seventh graders wrote about it.
Davida Nicholai:
When I went skiing I had fun. When I fell, I started laughing. Then me and Mary went long cut to go back to school.
When I went snowshoeing I told the teacher to take pictures of us and I posed a lot. It was a lot of fun but when I go here, my ankles were hurting.
Shantal Alirkar:
I remember when we went to the hill in Toksook Bay. That was my first time that I went skiing. When I went skiing the first time we went to the beach we all kept falling because we didn't really know how to ski.
When we had our second time skiing we all got so tired. I went home and the other students were skiing and went down hill. They told me that it was fun and they told me, "How come I didn't stay up there," and so we had fun.
Megan Friday:
Those times were fun and when we kept on falling it was fun. While we were skiing at the valley or something it was smooth. When I ski-ed down the hill it was like I haven't felt like that in many years! I was really amazed. And for snowshoeing, ha...it was kind of fun and kind of boring. But the part where we were spinning in the snow, it was fun!
Margaret Therchik:
When we went skiing down the beach and the hill it was so boring and fun at the same time. That time when we went to the beach it was fun. It was my first time. I tried climbing up a small cliff but I couldn't and then I had to take my skis off and climb. The cliff was about five feet or more.
When we went to the hill I didn't like it because it took like 30 minutes to get to the hill and I was slow when I almost got there. David went to go get us by snow machine. Then I skied down the hill. It was so fast then I fell and sat on my ski. Then my teacher's dog started chasing me
