National spotlight: Kusko meets Izzy the Immunization Bear
Kusko the Immunization Dog, mascot of the YK Delta Immunization Coalition, recently made a trip to San Francisco with his "handlers" Kathy Stanton and Rob Filipczak to attend the 8th annual conference on Health and Immunization Coalitions.
During the event, Kusko was introduced to his counterpart in California, Izzy the Immunization Bear.
"This was a historic event for Kusko to meet another champion in the immunization movement," said Filipczak, YKHC's Immunization Coordinator. "When we heard that Izzy was going to be at the event, we had to bring Kusko along."
The conference was a three-day event that provided training and informational sessions for various coalition members throughout the United States. There were also representatives from health and immunization coalitions in Canada, Guam, New Zealand and Australia.
"This was an opportunity to exchange ideas with members of other organizations," commented Stanton, YKHC's EPSDT/Immunizations Nurse and president of the Immunization Coalition. "We are constantly searching for ways to strengthen the coalition and improve the health of all in the Delta."
Kusko and Izzy were originally introduced by chance over the online communication network MySpace. They have become friends, sharing a common goal supporting immunization, while also making new friends from all over the United States.
