LYSD Students participate in Dual Credit Project

YKHC's Career Pathways program coordinated a successful Dual Credit Project this spring for 10 high school students from the Lower Yukon School District.

The semester-long course and a special trip to Bethel exposed students to college academics, campus life and student services as well as health career opportunities.

The collaborative effort between the Alaska Center for Rural Health, Alaska Mental Health Trust Fund, the Kuskokwim Campus-UAF, the Lower Yukon School District and YKHC, offered high school students a rare experience.

Students took a distance-education course through Elluminate Live, an online class forum, where students interact and communicate with their teachers through the internet. The three-credit course began in early February and continued through May.

"Through this exposure we hope that students are better familiar with going to college and that they will further their education," said Laurinda O'Brien, Executive Director of the YK Area Health Education Center (AHEC).

A stop at YKHC during the May visit to Bethel intoduced an array of career opportunities in the Behavioral Health division, which included Direct Care Providers, Clinicians, Social Workers and Psychiatric Technicians.

YK AHEC is planning another dual credit course offering for 2009.
