Rural health care challenges spark visitors' interest in YK region

Senator Inouye staff returns with CITC reps
Representatives from the Cook Inlet Tribal Council and Senator Inouye's Chief of Staff, Pat DeLeon, visited Bethel and the Betty Guy Clinic in Kwethluk August 23.
CHAP Director Bill Schreiner led the group through the clinic, describing some of the challenges rural Alaskans face when it comes to Health Care.
Over lunch at YKHC's Community Health Services Building, Health Services Vice President Jack Crow further discussed water accessibility, high-energy costs and educational opportunities in the region.
A tour of Bethel followed, including a stop at the Saturday Market and the Yupiit Piciryarait Museum.
Rasmuson Foundation visits the YK Delta
Delegates from the Rasmuson Foundation and various foundation partners toured YKHC facilities in both Bethel and Napaskiak August 18.
While visiting the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta Regional Hospital, Jack Crow, YKHC Vice President of Health Services, presented Rasmuson delegates with a plaque recognizing them for their generous donation of funds to bring a new CT Scanner to the hospital.
Following the presentation, guests joined Bethel community leaders and representatives from local organizations for a luncheon in the board room. Over lunch, the visitors discussed the challenges rural Alaskans face, including high energy costs and health care accessibility.
After a hovercraft and boat ride to Napaskiak, guests visited the Elena Alexie Memorial Clinic where they were introduced to a typical day in a village clinic.
The delegation included representatives from the Ford Foundation, Charlotte Martin Foundation and Paul G. Allen Foundation, among others.
