Career Pathways hosts brown bag lunch at BRHS

The Yukon Kuskokwim Area Health Education Center's (YK AHEC) Career Pathways Program sponsored the first Brown Bag Luncheon (Speakers Bureau) of the year.

This happened at the Bethel Regional High School on Wednesday, October 22. There were 15 student participants.

The focus of the first Brown Bag Luncheon was occupations in Optometry. Dr. Pam Conrad and Eric Jan, Student Intern from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry, shared information with students on occupations in the care of the eye, such as Optometric Technician to the level of Doctor of Optometry. Eric Jan gave students his perspective of what it takes to be successful in Optometry School. There were many questions about optometry as well as other health professions.

Ruth "Wally" Richardson, Native Hire and Employment Manager, and Lauri O'Brien, YK AHEC Executive Director, shared information with students on opportunities in health careers as well benefits of working with Tribes and YKHC.

Allison Broerman, VIP Coordinator from BRHS, spoke with students on the importance of reflecting on what type of work they might enjoy.

The Brown Bag Luncheons happen once a month at the Bethel Regional High School throughout the school year. The YK AHEC promotes health careers to K-12 learners as well as adults in the Yukon Kuskokwim Delta. AHEC plans to visit at least 10 communities this fiscal year.

Quyana to Pam, Eric and Wally for sharing with up-and-coming health professionals of tomorrow!
