Kuskokuak Slough in late October. River routes may be well frozen by now, but its always advisable to stick to the well-traveled trails, keep on the lookout for signs of weak ice and always tell someone where you're going and when you expect to arrive. Photo by Chris Ho for Bethel Search & Rescue.
Respect for the River
Each year, YK Delta residents are involved in accidents while traveling on the ice. Don't forget that traveling on ice can be a dangerous and risky activity. Like any other activity, be aware of your surroundings including ice condition. Avoid ice that is slushy, near moving water, layered ice, or ice that has thawed and refrozen. Only go on clear, thick ice! Be sure to gather information about ice thickness before traveling.
Snowmachine and ATV safety starts before you even ride!
- Be sure to follow manufacturer's recommendations for proper maintenance.
- Avoid riding alone when possible, and always advise someone you trust of your trip plan.
- Conduct a pre-ride inspection to check important components of the vehicle.
- Don't forget to check fuel and oil levels!
- When riding, be aware of weather conditions, terrain, daylight/dark, and trail markings.
- Vehicles should not be operated while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- When you return from a ride, don't forget to check in with your safety contact.
