Camai,
Let me introduce myself. I am Dave "Pappy" Springer the very new EMS coordinator for YKHC. As I type this I've been here just three weeks.
With your help I hope to revive the EMS corner in this newsletter. I will try to have a tip of the month, as well as to answer your questions about emergency preparedness, and emergency medical care in particular.
What would you like to see me address in this space? I can discuss boating or fishing safety, four wheelers, gun safety, first aid tips, water safety, whatever you would like me to address. EMS is here to serve you. I know that I do not have ALL of the answers, but I know where to go to find them.
You can contact me at my desk at: 907-543-6080, or via e-mail as dave_springer@ykhc.org. with any tips, ideas, hints, compliments or concerns.
The April tip of the month is: Have you changed your back up batteries in your weather alert radio? Better yet do you have a working weather radio? Remember that on a routine basis these weather radios can be full of useful weather info. Did you miss the news on the hour? Just turn on your weather radio for the up to the minute info.
On the other hand when the weather turns deadly with blizzards, freezing cold, dangerous winds, tornados, tsunamis, or what have you the alert feature will bring you the very latest potential life saving information.
Did you know that these radios also put out Amber Alerts for missing children? Did you know that these radios can be activated by the civil authorities in case of emergency? Did you know that these radios can be activated for attack warnings, and a myriad of other emergencies?
The frequency for the Bethel transmitter is 162.5500 MHz. I am not familiar with any other transmitters in the delta at this time. If you are aware of any please pass them on to me via e-mail or phone.
Do you have a marine radio for your boat that you take out of the water in the winter? If you do you can set it up at home with a 12 volt DC power supply of only a few amps and a small antenna although it may or may not have an alert feature it can be used to check the weather from time to time during the off season. That keeps your radio someplace besides the deep freeze over the winter. Just make sure not to transmit with it as number one it is not legal, and number two you may blow your drivers or the final in the radio if it is not connected to the proper VHF marine band antenna.
Until next month, stay safe. I want you back.
