Why Donate Blood?

Blood Drive

As you may have heard, the Blood Bank of Alaska is returning to Bethel for a second blood drive. Donating blood does save lives, but before you sign up to donate, you may have some questions.

Blood Donation Requirements

  • Be in go

  • Be at least 17 years old
  • Weight at least 110 pounds
  • Have valid identification (driver’s license, state ID or passport)

Blood donors may be 16 years old, but must have parental consent and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds.

Reasons to Donate

  • One donation can save up to three lives
  • Every two seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion*
  • Only 5% of the population donates blood*
  • There is no substitute for human blood
  • It’s completely safe
  • Did you know that YKDRH has utilized 222 units of blood since a year ago last September?
  • Nearly 100 patients have used blood transfusions over the last year
  • The total number of units that YKDRH has on inventory is 22. Our hospital stock and inventory is replenished on a weekly basis, sometimes twice a week depending on need.

How Does it Work?

The process of donating blood involves four steps and usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. The donation itself takes six to ten minutes. The rest of the time is spend in reception in donor history and in the post-donation refreshment area.
