Community partners including YKHC, Public Health Nursing, University of Alaska Anchorage Nursing Program, the Lower Kuskokwim School District, and other community members gathered to plan and activate an Incident Command Structure (ICS)-based Mass Dispensing Exercise December 7. The object was to test the Chains of Command with regional and state ICS partners through providing seasonal flu shots to Bethel residents.
The event accomplished its purpose, with the participation of about 30 volunteers and the dispensing of close to 70 flu shots. The event was held at the LKSD Ayuprun gym (the old armory).
Coordinated events like this exercise provide an opportunity to identify resources that may be needed in the event of an actual pandemic, test the effectiveness of what is available to be used, and improve preparedness plans for an actual pandemic flu. Additionally, the it provided an opportunity for people to receive a free seasonal influenza vaccine.
Thanks to all the volunteers who participated and offered their time, energy, and supplies. Thanks to LKSD for providing a space, to Subway for providing food, to the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium and the State of Alaska for supporting us in our planning efforts.
It’s not too late to get your flu shot! Seasonal flu is here and the flu shot provides protection against this serious disease.
