Caroline Nevak shows the diseased pig's lung.
By Caroline Nevak
On the afternoon of October 25th, YKHC hosted it's annual Community Health Fair. The theme this year was Hawaiian. Different departments from all over YKHC came together at the Cultural Center from 1-4 p.m. to provide information to the public about their specific department or area of health specialty.
Carrie Enoch and I took part by promoting the Nicotine Dependence and Research Program located in the hospital. We displayed a nicotine-affected, diseased pig's lung along with educational materials regarding tobacco use and nicotine dependence.
We had plenty of informational sheets and also some great goodies to give away. The pig's lung was a big attraction for a lot of people. They were curious what it was and why it looked the way it did. This provided wonderful opportunities for Ms. Enoch and myself to discuss the dangers of tobacco use and nicotine dependence and its disastrous health effects.
The one-day event went very well. The Health Fair was a great opportunity to meet, educate, and raise awareness about tobacco use and nicotine dependence.
