Physician Assistant and Health Care Professional Scholarship Program

The PA Scholarship Committee has decided to offer the scholarship program to not only tribal members of the YK Delta, but also to non-tribal members who have been employed with the Corporation for at least one year.

Adhering to our Corporate motto of "growing our own," the purpose of the PA Scholarship Program is to make financial assistance available to Yukon-Kuskokwim area students who are seeking to further their education in the field of healthcare, so that they may return to work for YKHC after completing their programs.

Allied Health Training

The Learning Center staff has been working with the University of Alaska to offer distance-delivered programs for Medical Billers and Coders. At the end of the class, the cohort will study and sit for their National Exam. Once a student passes the exam, they will receive a pay raise and increase the ability of YKHC to code locally instead of contracting this service to outside firms. A second cohort began their studies in April, 2003, and completed in October, 2003. The Learning Center is coordinating efforts for an Advanced Coding course in the near future for those who have completed the Basic Coding course.

Continuing Education, Career Ladders and Long Term Education

The Learning Center administers the Continuing Education, Career Ladders and Long Term Education Programs. Continuing Education courses are isolated courses taken by employees to improve or enhance their work skills. Individuals may also be in Career Ladder Plans, which are set up to train them for job-specific skills in a paraprofessional or professional occupation. Employees who are on Long Term Education Agreements are working on Associates level, Bachelors level or Advanced Degrees.

Custodial Maintenance Training

This is the first training of this kind at YKHC. HCI consulting from Denver, Colorado conducted the five-day training, which covered topics in both basic and advanced custodial theory and practice. Both presenters have combined experience of more than 40 years in the healthcare and environmental service fields. Twenty YKHC employees from both Facilities and Environmental Services participated. We anticipate offering this course once a year, depending on availability of department funds.

Administrative Assistant Training

The Learning Center collaborated with the Kuskokwim Campus for the design of a curriculum for Administrative Assistants. The purpose for the course is to provide support staff with baseline professional administrative skills for performance improvement. The Administrative Assistant college course will be a four-week course consisting of 3 credits titled "CIOS 165: Office Procedures." It will be 45 hours in length designed to sharpen personal management, job performance, and effective communication skills. The course will take place in the Fall 2003 and Spring 2004 semesters. The feedback from the first cohort in May 2003 was positive. Management and staff commented the course as a success and immediate improvement in job performance was observed. The Training Manager will identify participants for this training.
