The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation Nicotine Control and Research Program staff hosted a luncheon for the Delta Tobacco Control Alliance (DTCA) members on February 18 at the Community Health Services Building in Bethel.
Members from Kwethluk, Aniak and YKHC attended this one-day meeting to foster a stronger partnership and alliance throughout the Delta on issues of tobacco control, treatment, and prevention.
The DTCA is a newly-formed Alliance, replacing the now defunct Bethel Tobacco Control Alliance. The Bethel Tobacco Control Alliance was instrumental in working with YKHC and community members to pass the Clean Indoor Air (CIA) Ordinance in Bethel in 1999.
The luncheon meeting began with a presentation about YKHC's Nicotine Control and Research Program by Alex Modigh, the program's director, which included the current statistics on tobacco use rates in the Y-K Delta. Discussion ensued regarding the Alliance's focus and objectives in the coming year. Youth prevention and enforcement of the existing CIA ordinance in Bethel, along with CIA policies in the villages supported by the local tribal government will be the primary focus of the DTCA.
In the next DTCA Executive Board Meeting, by-laws will be adopted and Executive Board members confirmed. This meeting is scheduled for April 7, 2004.
