by Chris Ho, YKHC Public Relations

"They're helping to protect the public health in our communities by insuring the water is safe to drink," said Jeff Severn, Office of Environmental Health and Engineering (OEHE), "and we want to recognize their efforts by giving awards for outstanding service."

Severn is speaking of the village Water Plant Operators. They have taken courses such as boiler maintenance, electrical circuits and controls, small water systems, and wastewater systems. OEHE conducted seven training courses in 2003 that provided training to 112 participants.

Awards are being given to recognize Water Plant Operators in the YKHC region that have performed outstanding service operating their village's water plant during 2003. Examples of award prizes that will be given include round trip airline tickets to Bethel, gift certificates to ANICA and Alaska Commercial stores, tools and coats.

OEHE will be recognizing a Water Plant Operator every quarter in 2004. The goal is to recognize Water Plant Operators for their individual efforts insure that their water plant is providing safe water to their village.

"Consuming water that has been properly treated is key to preventing diseases and water related illnesses," said Severn. "Water obtained from alternative sources such as rain catchments and river water may contain bacteria, diseases, and other pollutants. Parents that get drinking water from a properly treated source help to ensure the health and safety of their families."

If you would like to nominate a water plant operator from your community for an award please contact Jeff Severn at 1-800-478-6599 or 907-543-6424.
