Nicotine Dependence Treatment
|
More than 1,400 patients have been seen so far in this hospital-based clinical program to help patients stop tobacco use. The program is based on the USPHS AHCR Clinical Best Practice Guidelines.
Patients are counseled at the outset of treatment and again at 6, 12, 26, and 52 week intervals. They are tracked closely throughout.
Quit rates are currently about 25 percent, which is two points above the national average for nicotine cessation treatment.
Physicians and midlevels at the Bethel hospital refer patients to the program for their initial assessments and treatment. In six pilot village sites, patients are referred by village health aides or mid-levels at the subregional clinics and treated by regional wellness counselors.
In 2004, three additional pilot sites will be added in the ongoing effort to provide village-based cessation treatment. Two of these sites will be subregional clinics that serve the populations of many villages from one central point. Yupik-speaking counselors, who have been trained by the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, perform all clinical counseling services.
