On April 29th, Alexandria Modigh, Director of Nicotine Control and Research presented YKHC's Nicotine Control Program to the Health Aides and Wellness Counselors of the Aleutian Tribe(s) and the Pribilof Islands. The API/A-EAT Tobacco Conference was hosted by the Alaska Native Health Board (ANHB) in Anchorage.
Modigh facilitated a power-point presentation and roundtable on spit tobacco. The audience was amazed by the Western Alaskan use rates of spit tobacco and extremely interested in how we are tackling this very serious health issue.
Tobacco use rates in Alaska are the highest in the country, and these dedicated professionals were very interested in how YKHC maintains such a successful program and high quit rate percentage among its population.
The roundtable discussion covered cessation and behavioral therapies currently employed by the YKHC Nicotine staff as well as pharmacotherapy. Many requested brochures and media samples as well as assistance and input as they continue to work on developing their own programs in their region.
