Don't forget the second dose!
by Deborah Burnard, RN, Immunization Coordinator

Most of the babies in the YK Delta come in to Bethel for their first set of baby shots, usually between 6 and 8 weeks of age. Some others may get them in the village by the health aides or by the Public Health Nurses. That's a great start, but to fully protect our babies less than 2 years old they need to come back for immunizations at 4 months, 6 months, 12 months and 15 months and 2 years.

If they wait too long between doses they might not be fully protected against some diseases that can make children very sick, cause lifelong disabilities and even death. They prevent disease by creating immunity. This helps your child stay well. Vaccines are especially helpful in the first two years of life because they help prevent diseases that are more severe in younger children.

For the best protection for your baby, start on time and complete the full series of shots. It is safe for your baby to have 3, 4 or 5 immunizations at the same visit. Your baby may come in just to get immunizations, or as part of a well-child checkup or during a visit for a minor illness. Immunizations may still be given if your child has a cold, mild fever or is taking antibiotics.

Getting immunizations is often much scarier for the parents than it is for the baby. The important thing to know is that getting the disease is much more harmful and scary than getting the shot. Vaccines are safe and are tested before they can be used. Some children may have minor reactions to shots. These can include a slight fever or soreness where the shot is given. Bad reactions are very rare and not hard to manage.

Right before and during the shot, talk to your baby. You can also distract him with a favorite toy. Your baby will stop crying faster if you hold him while he gets the shots, and you should comfort him with cuddles and hugs. You may want to nurse or offer a bottle during or after the shot.

A child who has never been immunized, or has missed some shots can still catch up. There are health aides who are trained to give immunizations in most villages and can tell you what shots your baby needs. If you have trouble making an appointment or have any questions you can call the Immunization Department at YKHC at 1-800-478-3321, or in Bethel at 543-6955 and 543-6437 for more information.

For the best start, don't forget the second dose! (or the 3rd, or 4th, or 5th!)
