Nicotine Control & Research

Alaska has made great strides in tobacco prevention and thousands of lives have been saved, but there is still much work to do. Cancer is the number one leading cause of death among Alaskan Natives in our region. The links between tobacco use and the incidence of cancer have long been noted. Reducing tobacco prevalence is a key element to eliminating the burden of disease and disability caused by its use and ensures a healthier future for our growing region.

About the Program

The YKHC Nicotine Control and Research program offers cessation services to anyone interested in quitting. A trained Tobacco Treatment Specialist is available to those who enroll and will provide support throughout the entire process. Replacement therapies such as the nicotine patch or gum are available, as well as other pharmacotherapies. Call today to schedule your appointment and take the first step to becoming tobacco free.

State of Alaska Tobacco Prevention & Control Grant

As a community grantee of the State of Alaska TPC program our department has committed to implementing measures which prevent the initiation of tobacco use among youth and young adults. Tobacco use among teenagers in the region is twice the national average. The effect of raising prices to reduce tobacco use among youth is a strategy that is supported by numerous research studies and is the grounds behind our work focused on implementing a local excise tax on all tobacco products for the City of Bethel. UPDATE: On December 11th, 2012, the City of Bethel became the first community in Western Alaska to pass an excise tax on tobacco products.

DTCA

The Delta Tobacco Control Alliance (DTCA) is a community coalition based in Bethel that works towards eliminating tobacco use in the YK Delta. The coalition acknowledges that addressing tobacco prevalence rates and changing social norms will take a comprehensive plan. Our strategy includes counter-marketing, tobacco price increases, smokefree places, and cessation support for tobacco users. We are hopeful that our efforts will create conditions for the people of this region to live free from the harmful effects of tobacco.

Mayo Clinic Research

The Mayo Clinic has formed a strong collaboration with YKHC which first started more than 12 years ago. Since then the long-established working relationship has been fundamental in creating opportunities to conduct research and create programs aimed at reducing tobacco prevalence rates in the region, especially among teens and young children. We look forward to continuing this relationship as future projects are explored.
