During the week of October 15–19, The Joint Commission, our hospital accrediting organization, visited us for our three-year unannounced accreditation survey.

The Joint Commission evaluates our hospital, behavioral health, and home care services and facilities.

The survey team consisted of an engineer, a nurse, a physician, and a psychologist. They toured YKHC facilities in Bethel and also spent two days visiting Emmonak, Kwethluk, Napaskiak, and Toksook Bay. They were accompanied by some of our staff and by two of our Governing Body Board members, James Nicori and Moses Peter.

The surveyors were impressed with our health care delivery system and told us that this was a humbling experience for them. They remarked about how friendly and warm the staff is here in our organization, and how impressed they are with the technology, level of care, and services that we provide in a remote location.

They said the results of the survey are very good, but there were some preliminary findings or shortfalls in certain areas. Their full and final report will be presented in the near future.

The surveyors commented on how appreciative they were that the staff was so open and forthcoming.

In addition, I would like to thank the staff that worked hard behind the scenes to get everything ready for the surveyors review.
