Participants lined up for selfies at the Energize Bethel even October 1.

On Saturday, October 1st, the Diabetes Prevention & Control Department hosted Energize Bethel at Gladys Jung Elementary School. The event included family-oriented, health and wellness activity booths that were provided by several YKHC partners and volunteers, plus Bethel Public Health, UAF Cooperative Extension, and the Bethel Fire Department. Community Educator Luz Smeenk from ANTHC’s Diabetes Program hosted the micro-green booth.

The event featured health and safety information and introduced participants to fun and useful ways to cope with stress and anxiety. Laughter yoga, adult coloring, simple musical instruments, healthy popcorn, and a simple workout to make a healthy smoothie are just some of the demonstrated activities. The concept behind this type of event is to offer a non-traditional health fair that engages families in learning about healthy lifestyle activities rather than just receiving educational brochures.

Energize Bethel was a success and it could not have been done without the support and contributions of our partners and volunteers.
