In September, YKHC and the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC) will graduate their first predoctoral intern, Xiomara Owens M.S.

Xio completed her yearlong internship in Bethel and Anchorage. The pilot project was intended to demonstrate the feasibility of training predoctoral psychology interns within the Alaska Native Tribal Health System.

Xio’s internship focused on the development of her assessment and intervention skills with Alaska Native clients and on the delivery of services through distance media, especially via video teleconference. Xio was supervised by Dr. Pamela Hays in Soldotna and Dr. Sarah Angstman in Bethel.

As Xio’s internship year comes to a close, we are looking forward to continuing to develop high quality psychology training programs that will fully prepare Alaskan psychologists for work with rural and Alaska Native clients. Congratulations Xio!
