Affordable Care Act – Tribal Member Exemptions

Starting in 2014, individuals must have health coverage or pay a tax penalty. In some cases, individuals, including American Indians and Alaska Natives who are eligible to receive services from an Indian Health Care Provider, may be able to receive an exemption from this fee.

The Affordable Care Act and Alaska Native People

Beginning January 1, 2014, every American must demonstrate health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Alaska Native and American Indian people are exempt from the requirement to purchase insurance if they can show evidence of their Tribal status.
