Weekly diabetes classes at YKHC

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation Diabetes Prevention and Control Department is pleased to offer fun and informative weekly classes for people with pre-diabetes, diabetes, gestational diabetes, their families, caregivers and children (over the age of 16). These classes are geared towards bringing families and the community together to learn about diabetes and promote health and wellness through diabetes education.

YKHC Wellness Wednesday Diabetes Classes will be offered every Wednesday throughout the fall and winter (excluding holiday weeks). Classes will be held in the Wellness Center Classroom on the second floor of the hospital.

Every Wednesday, participants can expect to learn about a different facet of wellness and how it can be incorporated into the daily lives of people with diabetes and their families.

If you have wondered: What causes diabetes? What are the signs of diabetes? Can I prevent getting diabetes? What foods and activities help me control my blood glucose? Why do I feel so tired and what can I do about it? How do I monitor my blood glucose?

“These classes will answer those questions and help everyone find ways to incorporate health and wellness into their daily lives,” says Christine LaCoy, Clinical Diabetes Educator and Nurse Case Manager. “Our goal is to provide education and support to people with diabetes and their families by sharing a simple meal and learning ways to be healthier.”

If you have questions about these classes or wish to sign up for Wellness Wednesday classes, please contact the YKHC Diabetes Prevention and Control Department at 907-543-6133.
