Education and Scholarships
YKHC is proud to be part of the Alaska Area Health Education Center (AHEC) network. The Yukon-Kuskokwim AHEC (YK AHEC), sponsored by YKHC, is one of six regional AHEC centers across Alaska.
Our mission is to strengthen the healthcare workforce in rural and underserved areas by providing educational opportunities, career guidance, and professional support for current and future health professionals.
At YK AHEC, we focus on:
- Healthcare education: Offering programs and experiences that introduce students to a variety of healthcare careers, from clinical care to public health.
- Tribal workforce development: Supporting members of the 58 tribes in the YKHC service area through scholarships, mentorship, and career pathways.
- Hands-on learning: Providing clinical rotations, preceptorships, apprenticeships, and work-based learning opportunities in healthcare settings.
- Rural and underserved exposure: Giving students the chance to experience primary care delivery in remote and culturally diverse communities, preparing them for the unique challenges of Alaska healthcare.
Through these programs, YK AHEC aims to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals, retain talent in rural Alaska, and ensure that communities throughout the Yukon-Kuskokwim region have access to high-quality, culturally relevant care.
