Health Education Opportunities

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Area Health Education Center (AHEC), sponsored by YKHC, is one of five regional centers for the program. The program’s goal is to implement educational activities, involving health professions, and to expose students to primary care delivery in rural and/or underserved areas. Alaska’s AHECs have a presence in Bethel, Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow), Anchorage, Fairbanks and Sitka.

Dental Health Aide Therapist Sponsorship

APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN. Next application deadline is Feb. 16, 2024. Covers tuition, housing, living allowance and travel assistance during the two years of formal education. Associate Degree possible with completion of training. Candidate will be paid as a YKHC employee eligible for YKHC benefits when they start their preceptorship and will agree to work for YKHC as a DHAT for four or more years. Connecting rural health providers to continuing Education Courses

Our AHEC team supports rural providers seeking continuing education credits to maintain their certifications. Internal training is offered for Annual Mandatory Orientation, Customer Service Training and Workforce Development. These trainings include mandatory training requirements and certifications required by The Joint Commission.

HEALTH CAREER EXPLORATION

Our AHEC staff coordinate opportunities that provide exposure to healthcare careers for students, including classroom speakers, facility tours and job shadow experiences.

CONNECTING HEALTH STUDENTS TO PRECEPTORS

We are proud to host clinical rotations in the following departments: Dental, Optometry, Pharmacy, Medical, Lab, Diagnostic Imaging, Environmental Health and Physical Therapy. 

Medical Residents will be considered if they are from Alaska and in their third or fourth year. International students are not considered for placement. We also offer students the opportunity to apply for Travel Reimbursement. 

Healthcare Apprenticeships

Offered in spring and fall in partnership with the Alaska Primary Care Association, these free, online courses are ideal for working individuals exploring career options as a Certified Dental Assistant, Certified Pharmacy Technician, Certified Biller and Coder and many other healthcare-related fields. Scholarship Program

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation is proud to offer various scholarships to students enrolled in health-related programs at accredited schools.

YKHC strongly encourages and supports the pursuit of education and the hiring of tribal health professionals. YKHC’s scholarship program is set up to encourage members of the 58 tribes served by YKHC and their descendants, as well as YKHC employees with good standing and immediate family members, to pursue further education and training as healthcare professionals. The priority for funding will be in line with P.L. 93-638, the Indian Education and Self-Determination Act.it of education
and the hiring of tribal health professionals. YKHC’s scholarship program is set up to encourage
members of the 58 tribes served by YKHC and their descendants, as well as YKHC employees with good
standing and immediate family members, to pursue further education and training as healthcare
professionals.

The priority for funding will be in line with P.L. 93638, the Indian Education and SelfDetermination Act.
Priority will be given to candidates who are enrolled as a fulltime or parttime student in an accredited
program leading to licensure or certification as a healthcare professional. Any funds awarded under this
program may be used for tuition, books, and fees only. Incomplete applications or applications received
after the deadline will be moved to the next application cycle

Who are the scholarships for?

Full or part-time students (minimum of 6 credits) who have been accepted to a health program of an accredited school.

Who Should Apply?

  • Tribal members
  • Alaska natives who reside in the YKHC service area
  • YKHC employees and immediate family members

What are the pre-requisites?

  • Student must have completed all pre-requisites for the program of study. Pre-requisites vary by program.
  • Student applying for funding at a graduate level must have previously received a Bachelor’s Degree.

When is the deadline?

  • The deadline for spring semester scholarship applications is November 1
  • The deadline for fall semester scholarship applications is June 1
