Challenging travel conditions result in longer wait time for medical travel

In our region, some customers have experienced extended wait times that are beyond our control for travel to medical appointments. In many instances, there are not enough lodging rooms and airline seats available to meet the demand. Amid these limitations, requests for medical travel are up nearly 25% over pre-pandemic rates. All these factors, combined with significant winter weather delays, mean it can take longer to get seen. Unfortunately, we expect these conditions to last for several months. We recognize this can be frustrating to our customers and their loved ones.

We understand the important role medical travel plays in our healthcare system. Seven days a week, our Travel Team works diligently with our travel partners and network of medical providers to arrange travel as quickly as possible. When necessary, we coordinate with our medevac provider for life-or-limb emergencies.

However, this year more than ever, there are unavoidable delays and rescheduled appointments due to either a lack of lodging or available flights or both. In these instances, we ask for your understanding and trust that we are making every effort to promptly arrange (and reschedule, when needed) all medically-necessary appointments. We are committed to this as part of our mission of working together to achieve excellent health.

YKHC Travel offices are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week, and can be reached at (907) 543-6625. The Update Booth in the hospital is open seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. If you need assistance after hours, please contact the Hostel at (907) 543-6400.

We also offer telehealth services that are appropriate for many medical conditions. Please speak with your YKHC healthcare provider to see if a telehealth appointment is right for you.

We are doing all we can to adapt to this season’s challenges and take care of each member of our community. Thank you for your patience as we navigate these delays together.
