YKHC, in coordination with the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services and the Centers for Diesease Control (CDC), is closely monitoring the Novel Coronavirus. There are currently no confirmed cases in YKHC’s service area or the state of Alaska. YKHC is participating in weekly status calls with the State of Alaska and will be notified immediately of any cases in Alaska.
People in YKHC’s service area should only be concerned if they have traveled to China in the last two weeks. If you have traveled to China in the last two weeks and have a fever and a cough, call the YKHC Emergency Department at 543-6395. If you are in a village, still call the Emergency Department. Staff will provide guidance.
If you have been to China in the last two weeks and you feel ill, do not enter the hospital before calling the Emergency Department at 543-6395 so appropriate quarantine can be enacted.
If you have a fever and a cough and have not been to China in the last two weeks, you may have the seasonal influenza virus. This is often treatable at home with acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen.
The seasonal influenza presents a great health hazard to all, especially this time of year. Wash your hands often, particularly before coming into contact with infants and the elderly. Stay home any time you are ill to prevent spreading the flu.
It is still not too late to get the influenza vaccine to protect yourself, family and community. Influenza vaccines are available from your village clinic or the hospital in Bethel. To schedule a flu shot in Bethel, call YKHC Scheduling at 543-6442. To schedule a flu shot in a YKHC village, call your local clinic.
